Quick answer: First trip: Jungutbatu for boats, food and surf, or Mushroom Bay for calm swimming. Sandy Bay and Dream Beach for sunsets and cliffs; Ceningan for quiet. The island is small, so nowhere is far.
Lembongan is small: nowhere is more than 15 or 20 minutes from anywhere else by scooter. But the island changes a lot from one side to the other, and where you sleep shapes your days. Here are the areas, from the main beach round to the cliffs. We don't link to hotels and nobody pays to be here.
| Area | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Jungutbatu | First trips, surf, food, boat landings, sunrise over Mount Agung | Busiest area; the beach is shallow reef at low tide |
| Mushroom Bay | Calm swimming, families | Day-trip boats visit in the middle of the day |
| Tamarind Bay | Quiet, between the two above | Fewer places to eat on the doorstep |
| Sandy Bay and Dream Beach | Sunsets, cliffs, Devil's Tears on foot | Hilly; swimming only when the sea is flat |
| Lembongan village | Local life, temples, the underground house | Inland, no beach |
| Nusa Ceningan | Quiet, views, the Blue Lagoon | Steep roads; cross the bridge for most things |
Jungutbatu
The long beach on the north-west coast, where most boats land and the island's life happens. The widest choice of rooms and food, the surf breaks offshore, and on clear mornings Mount Agung rises across the strait. At low tide the water in front pulls back over reef and seaweed; at high tide it's good for a swim.
Mushroom Bay
A sheltered crescent of sand on the west coast, and the calmest water on the island for swimming. Good for families. In the middle of the day it's livelier when day-trip boats come in; mornings and evenings are calm.
Tamarind Bay
Between Jungutbatu and Mushroom Bay. Quieter, with a small beach, and an easy walk or short ride to both.
Sandy Bay and Dream Beach
The south-west corner: limestone cliffs, pale sand coves and the best sunsets on the island. Devil's Tears is a short walk. The shore break is strong, so this is for views and sunsets more than swimming. The roads are hilly, so a scooter or driver helps.
Lembongan village
The old village inland, with the main temples, local warungs and the Gala-Gala underground house. No beach, but a real feel for island life.
Nusa Ceningan
Across the Yellow Bridge: the smallest and quietest of the three islands, with clifftop views and the Blue Lagoon. Lovely if you want to slow right down, less handy if you want to be near food and boats.
Questions
What is the best area to stay on Nusa Lembongan?
For a first visit, Jungutbatu or Mushroom Bay. Jungutbatu has the most choice, food and boat landings; Mushroom Bay has the calmest swimming. Both are flat and walkable.
Is it better to stay on Nusa Ceningan or Lembongan?
Lembongan is easier, with more food and services. Ceningan is quieter and more scenic, but roads are steep and you'll cross the Yellow Bridge for most things.
Where should surfers stay on Lembongan?
Jungutbatu. The main breaks are off the north-west reef, and boats run surfers out from the beach.
